ATTENTION: ALL COACHES, SCHOOL AND CHURCH VOLUNTEERS

VIRTUS is a program designed to create and maintain a safe environment for our parish children. All parish adults who will serve in a school or parish activity involving children must complete VIRTUS training before they serve in their respective capacity with children. Blessed Sacrament will facilitate a VIRTUS training session on Monday, March 22, from 7:00 to 10:00 pm in Bishops Hall.

Please note that the doors are closed promptly at 7:00 - suggested arrival time is 6:45. Register for this, or any other VIRTUS training session online at virtus.org and follow the links to the Wichita Diocese programs.  For additional information, contact Julie Zluticky, 682.4557, or jzluticky@blessedsacramentwichita.com.

Spanish Website:  We are pleased to announce that we now have a Spanish class website at: http://sites.google.com/site/blessedsacramentsparish. This new site allows us to keep parents abreast of the work in Spanish class throughout the year. At this time, the site is a work in progress, let us know what features you would like included as it evolves. Contact Mrs. Childress with comments or questions.

Lunch Accounts: Were you aware that you can check your lunch balances on Power School? This is an easy way to stay abreast of your lunch account and means less paper sent home.

School Supply Closet: The school supply closet will no longer be open weekly. If you need an item, bring your money to the school office and the items will be sent to your classroom.

Immunization Changes

The new KS Dept. of Health requirements for the ’09-’10 school are as follows:

3 doses of Hep. B for incoming Kindergarten; 2 doses of Varicella (chickenpox) unless a dated history of chicken pox is documented by either the physician or parent (submitted in writing to the school nurse), for incoming Kindergarten.

For grades 1-9, one dose of Varicella or written documentation of disease. Tdap booster for students who are 11 years of age or older. Looking ahead, for ’10-’11, 2 doses of Varicella will be required for all incoming students, all grades, or documentation of disease by Physician.

Please check your child's immunization records and schedule additional shots as needed at your physician's office or the health department. The child's immunization record must be complete and the green State Immunization Form must be on file at the office.

Great news from 5-year Accreditation Visit - By Jim Grogan

On April 24th, Blessed Sacrament Catholic School underwent its Quality Assurance Review culminating our 3rd five-year cycle of School Improvement together (for myself and most of the faculty). The Quality Assurance Review is mandated by the state and by the North Central Association (NCA) accrediting agency (now a division of AdvancEd). Karen Norton, former principal of The Independent School served as the state’s Quality Assurance representative. Scott Ennis, Athletic Director of El Dorado High School, served as Chair of the Visiting Team for the past five years.  Also, on the team were Cameron Carlson, Associate Principal of  Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School and Mary Covington, Chemistry teacher at East High, former Kapaun teacher, and former Blessed Sacrament parent. Several students and parents took part in day’s activities by providing insight and testimony on all aspects of the areas under review.

The review went wonderfully and I want to thank the teachers (all of them) who worked so hard to make a success out of this process. All of them owned a large part of the responsibility (and stress) that allowed us to use the process to truly reflect on what we need to do to improve the services offered to students, teacher, parents, and all Blessed Sacrament stakeholders. I want to especially thank Mary Jo Hunninghake for completing her 3rd term as Steering Committee Chair.   The report shed light on many of our strengths and pointed toward areas where we could make improvements. I want to share with you a few of the commendations that were made:

  1. Blessed Sacrament’s pastor, Father Shawn McKnight, is truly committed to the school. He has redesigned its governance to provide more support for the school. By making the school a concern of the parish, Blessed Sacrament will thrive.
  2. Blessed Sacrament’s faculty and administration are never satisfied and are constantly looking for improvement. Self-ratings on the SAR (Self Assessment Review) reflect a desire not to become complacent but instead find ways to become an even stronger school.
  3. Students and parents are proud to be a part of Blessed Sacrament and are not hesitant to talk about it.
  4. Teaching and learning at Blessed Sacrament is designed with high academic standards within the Catholic faith, and the school is responsive to each individual student, including those with Special Needs.

This is a great time to thank you parents, parishioners and students and all of the Blessed Sacrament stakeholders for choosing to support our school in the many ways that you do, most especially by entrusting us to be your partners in providing for the spiritual, academic and overall educational needs of the children of Blessed Sacrament Parish.

While we realize that you still have many unfulfilled needs and concerns about several components of our programs (revealed through our yearly surveys and in the many encounters we have with you), we are confident that these issues will be addressed in the future by the best way we know how: a continued desire to improve and grow and work together to make Blessed Sacrament the best it can be.

Altar Server Schedule

1. Check schedule: e-mail, school or it’s always in the bulletin
2. Find sub if you can not serve
3. Be there 15 minutes early
4. Girls: keep hair pulled back, no make-up, fingernail polish, jewelry or hair accessories ( giant, bows ribbons etc.)

Altar Server schedules will now be available on your child’s Power School site (except when the site is closed before grading periods).  To Login to PowerSchool to download the Altar Server Schedule, click here.

Schedules will no longer be sent home with the students, beginning soon. You may also check the church bulletin.

Please remember that being an altar server is an important commitment, a service to Our Lord, and is to be taken seriously. If you are scheduled, please show up 15 minutes prior to mass beginning. If you cannot serve, you must secure a substitute to cover for you.
